How to Smudge Your Home — A Beginner's Guide

Smudging is the ancient practice of burning sacred herbs or wood to cleanse a space, object, or person of stagnant or negative energy. It is rooted in Indigenous North American traditions and has been used for centuries in spiritual, ceremonial, and healing contexts.

Step 1 — Set Your Intention
Before lighting anything, take a moment to clarify your purpose. Are you clearing energy after an argument, welcoming a new beginning, or simply refreshing the energy of your home? Hold that intention in mind throughout the ritual.

Step 2 — Open a Window or Door
Smoke carries energy out of a space, so give it somewhere to go. Open at least one window or door in each room you plan to cleanse.

Step 3 — Light Your Sage or Palo Santo
Hold the tip of your white sage bundle or Palo Santo stick over a flame for 10–20 seconds until it catches, then gently blow it out so it smolders and produces smoke. Rest it in your abalone shell to catch any falling ash.

White Sage produces a strong, purifying smoke ideal for deep energetic clearing — removing heavy, stagnant, or negative energy from a space.
Palo Santo ("Holy Wood") has a warm, sweet, woodsy scent and is used to invite positive energy, creativity, and calm after a clearing. Many practitioners use sage first, then Palo Santo to seal the space with good energy. Palo Santo can also provide a very strong energy cleanse if you are working with a space that has a buildup of negative energy.

Step 4 — Move Through Your Space
Starting at the front door and moving clockwise through each room, use the feather to gently waft smoke into corners, along walls, around doorframes, and into closets — anywhere energy can collect and stagnate. Speak your intention aloud or silently as you move.

Step 5 — Close the Ritual
Return to where you started. Press the smudge stick or Palo Santo firmly into the abalone shell to extinguish it. Express gratitude for the clearing and close any windows you opened. Make sure your sage or Palo Santo is completely out before storing--rinse under water to make sure the flame and smolders are extinguished.
